An emphasis on the way geography can determine political fate gives Hicks’s saga significant depth. Hicks’s sequential artwork is polished, and though males hold nearly all the political power, the female characters are mighty warriors the men respect (and sometimes fear). When the two learn of an assassination plot, loyalties shift and the pace vaults from brisk to blazing. Their secret forays expose Kaidu to the city’s darker truths, while Rat struggles with a sense that their friendship betrays the memory of her parents, who were killed by the Dao. However, Kaidu doesnt get along with his Dao peers, perhaps because hes more interested in books than fighting, and he instead befriends a girl named Rat.

Despite her resentment (“I don’t want to know the name of any Dao,” she snarls when he introduces himself), she agrees to teach Kaidu how to traverse the city’s rooftops in exchange for food. Kaidu, a Dao boy, arrives for military training and befriends a street girl named Rat. The city has been conquered by successive nations who grind its native inhabitants underfoot it’s now ruled by the Dao. This is an incredibly well done series with excellent illustration and an amazing world.Hicks ( Friends with Boys) sets this trilogy opener in an imaginary city whose architecture and dress have a Tibetan air. To them, their home is the Nameless City, and those who try to name it are forever outsiders. The natives dont let themselves get caught up in the unending wars.

But before long, new invaders arrive and the City changes hands once again. I would recommend to those who enjoy fantasy graphic novels about war and politics. Every nation that invades the City gives it a new name. This should be a graphic novel adults will enjoy too it’s complex enough and deals with some interesting issues around war.Overall I really loved this 2nd volume in the Nameless City series.

I would recommend to middle grade and older readers as a result. The story is getting increasingly complex and things get pretty intense. Both are struggling not only to save the City but their own lives. The illustration throughout is fantastic and easy to follow. The characters are amazing as well. The Nameless City ends up on the brink of war spite the best efforts of those who live there and want to engender peace once and for all.Kadu unravels more history behind his father’s past and Rat reveals some secrets behind the monastery she grew up in. I love the detail that went into building this world and the beautifully colored and detailed illustrations. This was an amazing continuation of The Nameless City series.
